Zundapp Military Motorcycle with a Sidecar Mounted with a Machine Gun

An interesting military motorcycle was made by the Zundapp Company in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Some of their motorcycles had sidecars with a machine gun mounted on it. Below are the company’s history as well as a video and a couple of pictures.

In 1917, the German Zundapp company was founded by Fritz Neumeyer. Neumeyer, along with Friedrich Krupp AG (AG stands for Aktiengesellschaft, which means a tightly held corporation) and Theil tool manufacturer, started producing detonators for bombs during WWI under the Zundapp name.

In 1921, they came out with the Z22 model. This model was called the Motorrad fur Jedermann (motorcycle for all people). In 1933, the company started building heavier motorcycles referred to as the K-series. These models had engines ranging in size from 200cc-800cc.

During WWII, the Germans used a million motorcycles and 40,000 of them had sidecars. By adding a machine gun, the Zundapp motorcycles were designed for the German Blitzkrieg (meaning lightning warfare).

The manufacturing plant was destroyed during bombing raids, but it was eventually rebuilt. Once the plant was rebuilt, the company made many different models of both motorcycles and scooters. Unfortunately, in 1984, the company went out of business.
